NEGOTIN
About the
municipality
The municipality of Negotin span in 1089 square km and it’s
located on Serbian, Romanian and Bulgaria border. The
municipality is predominantly oriented in Agriculture and
the production of grapes and wine. About 1700 hectares of the
municipality is covered by vineyards, which are used for the
production of wine with a long tradition of seven centuries.
Production of high quality cereals and vegetables is also very
developed, a large area under forests, which are rich in
medicinal herbs, mushrooms and other wild fruits as well as
various low and high game provides unique opportunities for
the export of environmental products as well as for the
development of hunting tourism.
Rich historical and
cultural heritage, including archaeological finds from
Neolithic, the remaining of the Roman culture from the
tetrarchy, medieval monasteries and monuments in recent
history, which together with the untouched nature and rural
tourism are developed municipality Negotin in one of the most
attractive tourist destinations in Serbia.
Population
The municipality consists of 39 settlements with a total of
16,597 households. According to the listing in 2002, 43,551
inhabitants are living in municipality of Negotin (not
counting the citizens who are temporarily reside abroad).
Climate
Surrounded by mountains , (Miroč, Crni Vrh and Deli Jovan),
and open space on the eastern and southern sides Negotin
Municipality is the most continental area of eastern Serbia
with warmest summers and coldest winters. In the winter months
temperature goes down to 30 degrees Celsius below zero, and
during the summer temperature goes up to 40 degrees in the
shade.
Negotin City
The city is situated in the central part of the
municipality, in the valley just 47 meters above sea level.
The development of Negotin as urban settlement starts in the
late Middle age, and today is a town of about 19,000
inhabitations. Although small as a city, Negotin is known as a
city with a soul. For it is traditionally associated wine,
songs and heroism, and everybody who visit Negotin will feel
that.
The History of
Krajina
Neolithic traces of man found on the coast of the Danube
river in the villages of Prahovo, Dušanovac and Radujevac
testify that the territory of Negotinska Krajina was inhabited
in the Stone Age. The results of the studies of archaeological
material in Lepenski vir speaks to more than six thousand
years that to the banks of the Danube river in Ðerdap and its
immediate hinterland lived people whose material culture was
on the high level. Many nations who lived in east Serbia
through the past centuries records progress, development and
disappearance of their civilization.
